M272 valve cover gasket12.12.2020
In order for an engine to function it needs engine oil to lubricate reciprocating parts. This means that the engine covers need to have seals to prevent engine oil from leaking out. One of the most common jobs to perform is replacing the valve cover gasket.
Mercedes-Benz uses a rubber seal to form the valve cover gasket. This seal can shrink as a result of the heat cycles that the engine generates as the car is used. This will allow engine oil that is thinner from the engine to seep past the seal and form a layer of oil coating the engine. In this tech article we will go over all the steps to replace the valve cover gasket. The valve cover gasket is one of the most common places to have an oil leak on your W If you have an oil leak down the exhaust side or front of your engine, start at the top and replace the valve cover gasket.
When the valve cover gasket leaks, it can create quite a mess and seem much worse than it is. Engine oil can also leak from the breather covers and looks a lot like a valve cover leak. If you suspect the breather covers are leaking, remove the ignition coils and inspect the area around the breather covers for leaks. See our tech article on breather hoses and covers replacing for more information. Protect your eyes, hands and body from fluids, dust and debris while working on your vehicle.
If working with the electrical system, disconnect the battery before beginning. Always catch fluids in appropriate containers and properly dispose of any fluid waste. Recycle parts, packaging and fluids when possible. Never work on your vehicle if you feel the task is beyond your ability. In this tech article, I will show you how to remove the necessary components from each side of the engine to access the valve covers.Chevy 350 oil pressure at idle
Then I will show how to remove the right side valve cover. The right side is similar. Disconnect the battery.

These new gaskets have visibly larger pins for the GP circuits.
These gaskets arrived well packaged along with the other parts I ordered. All the tabs were intact and the pass through connection had straight pins. Please note this gasket does not come with the internal wiring harness for your injectors or glow plugs.
In short the gasket sealed well and all the wiring plugged in fine. This gasket was great quality. Fast delivery good product. Worked perfectly. What more a can you ask for?

Great gaskets good quality. The valve cover seals the top of the cylinder head; usually with a rubber or synthetic gasket that fits into a metal or plastic cover. The gasket is most often replaced when it begins to leak oil, or as a part of other engine work. But being on the top of the engine does allow them to cause more problems.
Oil can leak from the valve cover onto the exhaust manifold, causing smoke and even fires, and it can coat and damage rubber parts. One thing to keep in mind is that usually, you can get individual valve cover gaskets from a dealer source. However, most aftermarket suppliers will bundle all the necessary parts together.
In addition to the gasket itself, there are often rubber grommets that seal the bolts holding the valve cover down and often seals that go around the spark plug tubes. As a rule, all of these should be replaced during a valve cover gasket replacement. On a V-6 or V-8 engine, there will be two valve covers, and if only one is replaced, the unused parts from a set are usually given to the customer if asked.
On some engines, the crankcase is fully sealed and under vacuum at idle and during normal operation. The valve cover gasket then also holds vacuum; a problem that causes an oil leak there under some conditions will cause a vacuum leak under other conditions, which can cause the engine to run poorly.
Replacement of the valve cover gasket involves moving out of the way whatever wiring harnesses or obstructions there are; sometimes removing coils or spark plug wires, then unbolting and removing the cover. These are sealed with a small bead of gasket material which means cleaning off the old gasket material first.
The cylinder head has open passages to the crankcase, so the valve cover is essentially the upper seal for the crankcase. If there is an excess of this, the crankcase becomes pressurized and prone to forcing oil out. A new valve cover gasket might hold pressure on an engine with a blow-by problem, but oil will likely find another weak point to escape from. The PCV system or the positive crankcase ventilation is designed to remove combustion gases from the crankcase and recycle them into the engine air intake.
On a normal engine, this minimizes crankcase pressures and reduces any tendency to develop leaks. If a valve cover gasket is leaking or if crankcase pressure is a suspect, it is a good idea to check the PCV valve. The PCV valve was at one time a regularly replaced service item as they were prone to clog and fail.
However, newer engines run cleaner and problems are rarer. Nevertheless, the PCV valve can still fail, and it should be ruled out as a cause of an oil leak problem during diagnosis or when repairs are being made.
In many modern engines, the PCV valve is permanently built into the valve cover and only replaceable by replacing the valve cover. Daniel Rey Engine. Costs of Valve Cover Replacement. This system caused one of the biggest Mercedes-Benz recalls.
Once the affected cars have been sorted out by the recall, the system is reasonably reliable. Once the pump reaches a fixed number of braking cycles number of times the brake pedal is pressed a warning light will come on.
At that point, the pump needs to be replaced because it means that it has reached the end of its design life. If not replaced, the pump will eventually fail. Reconditioned SBC pumps are also available for a smaller price. If the SBC pump fails, a warning message is displayed on the dashboard and braking power is massively reduced — this could happen at motorway speeds. Also, the SBC pumps occasionally fail before reaching their design lifespan. It was replaced by traditional hydraulic brakes in the middle of In my opinion, the SBC was a failed experiment.
They will also be much cheaper to service if anything goes wrong. Hence my recommendation to avoid CLS-Class cars produced in and earlier. Sensotronic Brake Control malfunction. It was an optional extra in other models — this may differ between countries. Air suspension is commonly used in trucks and buses because vehicles with air suspension can maintain correct height and level despite the load. Have you ever seen a bus tilt and soon after level out when the passengers get off at the bus stop?
The Airmatic ride quality is indeed very good. In a CLS-Class car equipped with Airmatic, the suspension is supported by four struts — air springs and dampers integrated into single units. In my opinion, the Airmatic is not unreliable, but it is significantly more complex than traditional suspension. Some people got burned by trying to fix their Airmatic suspensions at a Mercedes-Benz dealership.
The prices at the dealership can be high when it comes to sorting out Airmatic issues, and the typical dealership approach is to keep replacing components until the problem is fixed, without actually trying to locate the exact failure point. The parts can be expensive but most things, like struts or the air pump, are easy to replace.
Also, be aware that if some critical components in the Airmatic fail, for example, the air pump, the car will become undrivable. There are multiple options available on the market today that can help you save money servicing the Airmatic suspension :. When checking the Airmatic suspension, look out for the following symptoms of malfunction :. Check the car after it has been standing still overnight — it should not be on the ground. A little bit of pressure may escape, but the car should stay up and level.
A system in good condition should be able to hold air for a couple days easily. If it drops in a couple hours, something is worn out or there is a significant leak somewhere. Driving with air leaks will prematurely kill the air pump because then it has to turn on more often to replace the escaping air. If you are going to buy a car that has a leaking system, expect the air pump to be on its way out too. Airmatic suspension.

It is driven by the timing chain as it needs to in sync with the engine pistons. A balance shaft is needed to make a V6 engine smooth because they are inherently unbalanced.
Replacing Your Mercedes Valve Cover Breather Gaskets
These gears may be defective too.It is not bad enough that the Mercedes-Benz W's valve covers leak over time but the fact that the breather gaskets leak as well is a surprisingly poor piece of engineering from Mercedes-Benz. If you have noticed that your valve covers are filthy with oil around the breather covers there is a very good chance the gaskets are going bad.Yamaha xsr scrambler
Unfortunately they don't sell a gasket for the covers so you are going to have to use RTV to make your own. Repairing them is not that difficult, most of the job is cleaning, but this article will walk you through the steps.
With the ducts off remove the front engine cover. It pulls up and away from the engine. The cover is held on by five clips and will easily come off with hand pressure. Next, you will need to remove the main engine cover that also houses the air filters.
It is held on by four pressure clips. You can see the two at the front of the engine, to remove the housing lift it at the front of the engine and once the front clips release the rears which you can not see will release as well.
We are going to begin with the right side covers. You will be able to see the valve covers on top of the heads, they hold the coils. The breather cover is located just above the coils. Disconnect the three individual wiring harnesses going to each coil. They simply squeeze in and pull out of the coil.
Next, remove the crankcase breather hose from the breather cover.Grasshopper contours to mesh
If the hose is fairly new it should slide off. If the hose is original or old there is a very good chance it is dry and brittle and you are going to damage it and need to replace it. Do yourself a favor and order new hoses before you start this job. Use a T Torx and remove the three bolts holding the coil packs in place. With the bolts gone you can just swing the coils out of the way. The cover is held on with RTV compound so you will have to wiggle it around to get the seal to break loose.
Do not hit the plate or try and jam a screw driver between the valve cover and breather cover as this can damage both covers causing them to leak even more. You do not have to clean every where on the two covers unless you are going for a concourse look but you do need to clean off all of the old gasket and clean any areas that mate. Any good high-temp RTV sealant will do.I took my valve cover off on my Kia Soul Base 1.
I see one item that might be a possible culprit. I see a dowel in your valve cover… Perhaps that should be in the head? Maybe that is preventing it from easily docking to the head. Is there a dowel anywhere else in the valve cover we cant see?
Is there a dowel in the head on the left side? Sometimes those dowels can decide to come out of where they are supposed to be and remain in the other half of assemblies. Throwing you off momentarily. I also see what looks like a roller lifter in the valve cover…something that surely rolls on the camshaft…is it stuck?
Well you see one now, they have been driven off the camshaft on direct injection engines for the last 14 years. It was indeed the fuel pump roller in the way. I now understand why that was a terrible idea. Yes indeed… You could also have rolled the engine over a bit so the cam lobe that interfaces the pump roller was in the down position. It would have reduced the resistance a good bit… Either way…you got the clues you needed to solve the issue.
Why any mfg would want to expose the valve cover to those rapid lifting forces is beyond me. To me it suggests possible future valve cover gasket leaking problems, but again, neither here nor there.
Well, then, what do You think of Mercedes Benz and their use of the valve cover as bearing caps for the camshafts??? And, on a Suzuki Swift, you have to remove the sproket and cam. Yeah true. I have seen those before and I can still recall the first time…it was peppered with expletives. I was working at a Benz dealership when those M and M engines had just came out and had proven themselves beyond a shadow of a doubt. Not to mention the After awhile you got used to it, but it was never enjoyable, and it was never particularly profitable for the mechanic, even if everything went perfectly.
